Jef Gilson

Jef Gilson on vinyl: jazz from Paris, open to the world

In short: Jef Gilson (1926–2012) was a pianist, bandleader, arranger and producer in Paris. He supported young talent, founded the Palm label and brought jazz and music from Madagascar together with his group Malagasy. In recent years many of his recordings have been reissued. The Vinyl Room currently has 7 Jef Gilson records.

What makes Jef Gilson special?

Curiosity as a principle: on “Œil Vision” the young violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, long before he became world-famous, plays with saxophonist Jean-Louis Chautemps. With Malagasy came “Malagasy” and “At Newport-Paris” – jazz with the rhythms of Madagascar.

“Chansons De Jazz” shows a lighter side, and the collections “The Archives” and “The Best Of Jef Gilson” on the British label Jazzman show different sides of his work, including previously unreleased recordings.
