Soundtracks on vinyl: horror, cult films and Studio Ghibli

In short: Soundtracks are the music for films and series – from song collections to composed film scores. At the Vinyl Room the focus is on horror and cult films of the seventies and eighties, plus Ennio Morricone and Joe Hisaishi’s music for the films of Hayao Miyazaki. You’ll currently find 281 soundtrack records here.

What makes soundtracks on vinyl special?

Many film scores of the seventies and eighties were long available only as out-of-print originals. In recent years labels such as Waxwork, Death Waltz and Mondo have reissued horror and cult film music – often on coloured vinyl with new artwork. Joe Hisaishi is best known for his music for Hayao Miyazaki’s films, including “My Neighbor Totoro”; many of these records came out as Japanese editions. Ennio Morricone stands for the great era of Italian film music.

What to look for

With reissues, editions often differ only in vinyl colour and inserts; which one is sought after depends on the edition. With originals, label, catalogue number and runout help. Japanese editions often have an obi, a paper strip around the sleeve, which adds to the value.
