The White Stripes

The White Stripes on vinyl: Elephant, Icky Thump and the singles

In short: As The White Stripes, Jack White and Meg White from Detroit made raw garage rock with guitar, drums and vocals from 1997 to 2011 – all in red, white and black. The Vinyl Room currently has 20 White Stripes records, many of them 7-inch singles from England.

What makes the White Stripes special?

“White Blood Cells” (2001) was the breakthrough, and “Elephant” (2003) with “Seven Nation Army” made the duo famous worldwide. The album was recorded at Toe Rag Studios in London with analogue equipment – Jack White insisted on recording without computers. Then came “Get Behind Me Satan” (2005) and “Icky Thump” (2007). In England and Europe the records came out on XL Recordings, and almost every single had 7-inch editions, often on coloured vinyl and with their own B-sides.

Singles, colours and reissues

It’s the 7-inch singles that make the White Stripes a collecting field: the same single often exists in several editions with a different colour or B-side. Reissues today mostly come out on Third Man Records, Jack White’s label. Catalogue number, runout matrix and label together tell you whether you have a first pressing – more on our page “How to spot a first pressing”.
