Krautrock on vinyl: Can, Neu!, Conny Plank and Brain

In short: Krautrock is the experimental rock music that emerged in Germany in the late sixties and the seventies: hypnotic rhythms, long improvisations, electronics and studio experiments. Can, Neu!, Cluster and Popol Vuh still influence musicians today. The Vinyl Room currently has 27 krautrock records.

What is krautrock?

Young musicians in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Munich looked for a music of their own beyond German Schlager and English rock. Can combined rock with jazz and contemporary classical music, Neu! invented the driving “motorik” beat, Cluster and Harmonia worked with electronics, Popol Vuh with meditation and world music. The English music press gave the music the name “krautrock”. Many records came out on labels such as Ohr, Brain and Sky – and a lot of it was made in Conny Plank’s studio.

“For me there are two main producers of krautrock: Conny Plank and Dieter Dierks. Dierks was on the rock side, with the Scorpions among others. Plank more in the experimental, far-out krautrock scene.”

A story from Brain

“There’s a story to Jane’s ‘Germania’: Jane had a contract with Brain for eleven LPs, and this was the eleventh. Brain wanted them to stop with this progressive krautrock and make commercial rock. The label even offered them 50,000 marks not to make the LP – that’s how sure it was that the record would cost more than it earned. But Jane didn’t want to move away from their music.”
DJ Socki · Plattenparty video at 1:12:14 · translated from German

What to look for

Some German original pressings of the early seventies are sought after and expensive; they are often recognisable by label and catalogue number. Many krautrock classics are now available as good reissues – an affordable way to get to know the music.
