Jazzman ‎

Jazzman on vinyl: spiritual jazz and funk almost nobody knew

In short: Jazzman is a British label that has been rediscovering music since the late nineties: funk, soul and jazz records that once came out in tiny runs and are almost unaffordable today. It’s famous for the “Spiritual Jazz” compilation series, plus funk compilations from individual US states and reissues such as those of the Don Rendell / Ian Carr Quintet. The Vinyl Room currently has 84 Jazzman records.

What makes Jazzman special?

Behind Jazzman is the collector Gerald Short. He and his team look for records that often came out in small numbers in the sixties and seventies – private pressings, local labels, forgotten sessions – and reissue them carefully, with liner notes and photos.

That’s how series came about that mean a lot to collectors: “Spiritual Jazz”, with music between modal jazz and meditation, the funk compilations “Carolina Funk”, “Florida Funk” and “California Funk”, the soul series “Sister Funk” and French jazz beat with “Le Jazzbeat!”. Then there are full albums: the French jazz musician Jef Gilson, Lloyd Miller’s “A Lifetime In Oriental Jazz”, Milton Wright’s “Spaced” – and from England the Don Rendell / Ian Carr Quintet, whose sixties originals are among the most sought-after British jazz records.

First edition means: first Jazzman edition

With Jazzman the music is usually old, but the record is new. When we mark a Jazzman record as a first pressing, we mean the first edition of the Jazzman release – not the original record from the sixties or seventies. Many Jazzman editions are themselves long out of print and sought after.
