How often?

Palm on vinyl: free jazz from Paris and Madagascar

In short: Palm was the label of the French pianist and bandleader Jef Gilson. In the seventies it released free and modal jazz – and encounters with musicians from Madagascar, whose rhythms merged with jazz. Many of these records are available again today as reissues. The Vinyl Room currently has 6 records on Palm.

What makes Palm special?

Jazz that crosses borders: with his group Malagasy, Jef Gilson combined French jazz with the sounds and rhythms of Madagascar – to be heard on “Malagasy” and “At Newport-Paris”. “Madagascar Now” by Sylvin Marc and Del Rabenja continues this path.

From the south of France comes Cossi Anatz with “Jazz Afro-Occitan”, a blend of jazz, African rhythms and Occitan tradition.
