The Sylvers on vinyl: family soul with disco fever

In short: The Sylvers were a band of siblings from Memphis who grew up in Los Angeles. With “Boogie Fever” they had a US number one in 1976; group member Leon Sylvers III is now regarded as one of the defining producers of eighties boogie-funk. The Vinyl Room currently has 9 Sylvers records.

What makes The Sylvers special?

“Showcase” (1975) with “Boogie Fever” was made with producer Freddie Perren at Capitol – buoyant pop-soul for radio and dance floor; “New Horizons” (1977) followed on the same label. On Casablanca came “Forever Yours” and “Disco Fever”, fully in the spirit of the disco years.

“Concept” (1981) came out on Solar, the label Leon Sylvers worked for as a producer, “Bizarre” (1984) on Geffen. Their records trace the path from seventies family pop to eighties funk.
