The Impressions

The Impressions on vinyl: Chicago soul with a message

In short: The Impressions came from Chicago and, with Curtis Mayfield as singer and songwriter, became one of the great soul groups of the sixties. Songs like “Keep On Pushing” and “People Get Ready” accompanied the civil rights movement. Later their records came out on Mayfield’s own label Curtom. The Vinyl Room currently has 13 Impressions records.

What makes The Impressions special?

The three-part harmonies of Curtis Mayfield, Sam Gooden and Fred Cash, plus Mayfield’s gentle guitar: that was the sound of Chicago soul. We have the ABC records “The Impressions”, “Ridin’ High”, “We’re A Winner” and “The Versatile Impressions”, plus collections such as “The Best Impressions... Curtis, Sam & Fred”.

From the Curtom years we have “The Young Mods’ Forgotten Story” (1969) and “Preacher Man”; after Mayfield went solo came “It’s About Time” on Cotillion in 1976.
