How often?

Count Basie on vinyl: swing from Kansas City

In short: Count Basie (1904–1984) came from New Jersey and made his name in Kansas City. From the mid-thirties he led one of the most famous orchestras of the swing era – with pieces such as “One O’Clock Jump” and “April In Paris” and with singers such as Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams. The Vinyl Room currently has 4 Count Basie records.

What makes Count Basie special?

Less is more: at the piano Basie often played just a few notes, and his band swung all the more easily for it. In the seventies he recorded for Norman Granz’s label Pablo – “Basie Jam #3” shows him at a jam session with soloists, “A Perfect Match” Ella Fitzgerald with his orchestra live at the Montreux festival in 1979.

Plus “The Songs Of Bessie Smith”, on which singer Teresa Brewer sings songs made famous by blues singer Bessie Smith with Basie, and the collection “Greatest Hits”.
