Ella Fitzgerald

Ella Fitzgerald on vinyl: the First Lady of Song

In short: Ella Fitzgerald (1917–1996) is regarded as one of the greatest jazz singers of all – with a clear voice, perfect intonation and breathtaking scat singing. From 1956 she recorded the “Song Books” for Norman Granz’s Verve label, a series devoted to the songs of great American composers. The Vinyl Room currently has 7 Ella Fitzgerald records.

What makes Ella Fitzgerald special?

Ella could sing a ballad with complete simplicity and improvise like a saxophone the next moment. “Sings The Rodgers And Hart Song Book” belongs to the famous Song Book series, and “Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie!” shows her with swing and ballads.

Live she was completely in her element: “Ella In Hollywood” and “Live At The Concertgebouw 1961” capture concerts from 1961. And on “A Perfect Match” she meets Count Basie’s orchestra in Montreux.
