Punk

Punk on vinyl: three chords and an attitude

In short: Punk emerged in the mid-seventies in New York and London: short, fast, simple rock songs and the attitude that anyone can start a band. The Ramones, the Sex Pistols and The Clash led the way; later came hardcore and many other variants. The Vinyl Room currently has 39 punk records.

What is punk?

Two minutes, full power: the Ramones are represented with “Leave Home” from 1977, The Clash with “Combat Rock” from 1982. In Berlin around 1980 women’s bands such as Malaria!, Mania D. and Matador emerged – here brought together on “M_Sessions”.

Later bands came out of punk too: the Beastie Boys with their hardcore EP “Aglio E Olio”, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and Iceage from Copenhagen.

What to look for

Many punk records first came out as singles and on small labels; label, catalogue number and country of release help you tell which edition you have – it’s noted with each copy.
