Mo’ Wax on vinyl: beats, samples and trip-hop from London

In short: Mo’ Wax was founded in London in 1992 by James Lavelle and shaped instrumental hip-hop and trip-hop in the nineties – music made of breakbeats, jazz samples and atmosphere. Among its best-known releases is DJ Shadow’s “Endtroducing.....”. The Vinyl Room currently has 13 Mo’ Wax records.

What makes Mo’ Wax special?

DJ Shadow built “Endtroducing.....” (1996) almost entirely from samples of old records – it is regarded as a milestone of sampling. “Preemptive Strike” (1998) collects his early tracks; we also have “You Can’t Go Home Again” (2002). With James Lavelle, as UNKLE, came “Psyence Fiction”, here also “Psyence Fiction Survival Kit”.

The “Headz” collections introduced the scene – here “Headz” as well as “Headz 2A” and “Headz 2B”. Plus David Axelrod, the producer and arranger whose sixties and seventies records were widely sampled, Dr. Octagon with “Instrumentalyst (Octagon Beats)”, Andrea Parker with “Kiss My Arp” and Liquid Liquid.
