DJ Shadow on vinyl: hip-hop from the record crate

In short: DJ Shadow – real name Josh Davis – comes from California and builds music from samples of old records. His debut “Endtroducing...” (1996) on the London label Mo Wax is regarded as a milestone: an instrumental hip-hop album made almost entirely from samples. The Vinyl Room currently has 6 DJ Shadow records.

What makes DJ Shadow special?

He digs through record crates for forgotten moments – drum breaks, strings, voices – and assembles them into dark, cinematic pieces. “Endtroducing...” is the centrepiece, “Preemptive Strike” collects his early tracks for Mo Wax; with its founder James Lavelle he also made “Psyence Fiction” as UNKLE.

With “The Private Press” (2002) he went further – in our stock “Selections From The Private Press” and “You Can’t Go Home Again”. “In Tune And On Time” shows him live at the turntables, and “The Less You Know, The Better” (2011) mixes hip-hop with rock and electronics.
