How often?

Ray Bryant on vinyl: soul jazz with blues and gospel

In short: Ray Bryant (1931–2011) from Philadelphia was a pianist with deep roots in blues, boogie and gospel. In the fifties he accompanied big names in jazz, and in the sixties he drew attention with his own soul-jazz albums full of groove. His tunes “Cubano Chant” and “Little Susie” are well known too. The Vinyl Room currently has 5 Ray Bryant records.

What makes Ray Bryant special?

His left hand rolls like boogie, his right sings like a gospel choir. On Sue Records in the early sixties he made “Groove House” (1963) and “Cold Turkey” (1964) – catchy soul jazz for jukebox and club.

“Live At Basin Street East” shows him before an audience in New York, and on Cadet came “Up Above The Rock”.
