How often?

Sue Records on vinyl: soul, rhythm & blues and organ jazz from New York

In short: Henry “Juggy” Murray founded Sue Records in New York in 1957. The label released early hits by Ike & Tina Turner and Jimmy McGriff’s breakthrough with “I’ve Got A Woman”. Add jazz with plenty of groove – pianist Ray Bryant, trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison. The Vinyl Room currently has 16 Sue records, most of them from the sixties.

What makes Sue Records special?

Jimmy McGriff is the core: “I’ve Got A Woman”, “At The Organ”, “At The Apollo” and “Blues For Mister Jimmy” – Hammond organ, blues and gospel. Ray Bryant plays soul jazz on piano on “Groove House” and “Cold Turkey”, and live on “Live At Basin Street East”.

Add Ike & Tina Turner with “Dynamite!”, Wilbert Harrison with “Let’s Work Together”, singer Ernestine Anderson, saxophonist Flip Phillips and trumpeter Harry Edison. Important for collectors: the American Sue is not the same as the British Sue label of the sixties.
