Pointer Sisters

Pointer Sisters on vinyl: from swing to synth-pop

In short: The Pointer Sisters from Oakland, California, started out in the early seventies with a mix of swing, scat, soul and funk. From the late seventies, as a trio with producer Richard Perry, they became pop stars – “Break Out” (1983) with “Jump (For My Love)” and “Automatic” is regarded as their most successful album. The Vinyl Room currently has 9 Pointer Sisters records.

What makes the Pointer Sisters special?

Hardly any group switched styles so effortlessly. On “The Pointer Sisters” (1973) and “That’s A Plenty” (1974) they sound like a forties jazz club – and they even won a Grammy for the country song “Fairytale”. “Having A Party” then brings funk and soul.

With Richard Perry and his Planet label, rock and pop joined in the late seventies – here “Priority” (1979) –, and with “Break Out” the glossy synth-pop of the eighties. Plus “Pointer Sisters’ Greatest Hits”, “Send Him Back” and “Serious Slammin’” from 1988.
