How often?

Blue Thumb Records on vinyl: soul, blues and rock without pigeonholes

In short: Blue Thumb was founded in Los Angeles in 1968, by Bob Krasnow and Tommy LiPuma among others. The label refused to be pigeonholed: blues, rock, jazz, soul and funk sat side by side, from British psychedelic folk to Californian jazz-funk. The Vinyl Room currently has 9 records on Blue Thumb Records.

What makes Blue Thumb Records special?

The Pointer Sisters released their first album here: “The Pointer Sisters” and “That’s A Plenty” mix forties-style jazz singing with funk and soul. Sylvester, who later became famous with disco, first sang soul and rock with his Hot Band – “Sylvester And The Hot Band” and “Bazaar”.

“Crusaders 1” opened the Crusaders’ years on Blue Thumb, after they had dropped the “Jazz” from their name. Plus Ike & Tina Turner with the blues of “The Hunter”, Sam Lay with “Sam Lay In Bluesland”, Dave Mason with “Headkeeper” – and “Unicorn” by Tyrannosaurus Rex, Marc Bolan’s early band, which came out on Blue Thumb in the US.
