How often?

McCoy Tyner on vinyl: from the Coltrane quartet to his own sound worlds

In short: McCoy Tyner (1938–2020) from Philadelphia was the pianist in John Coltrane’s quartet from 1960 to 1965 and played on “A Love Supreme”. After that he led his own bands – on Blue Note and, from the seventies, on Milestone – and became one of the most influential pianists in modern jazz. The Vinyl Room currently has 4 McCoy Tyner records.

What makes McCoy Tyner special?

You recognise his playing at once: powerful chords built in fourths, a forceful left hand and runs that roll over the keys like waves. On “Tender Moments” and “Expansions” for Blue Note he writes for larger line-ups with several horns.

“Together” from 1979 brings him together on Milestone with guests such as trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and flautist Hubert Laws. All our copies are seventies editions – whether original or later pressing is noted with each copy.
