Milestone on vinyl: new jazz and Riverside treasures

In short: Milestone was founded in New York in 1966 by producer Orrin Keepnews, who had previously run Riverside, and pianist Dick Katz, and became part of Fantasy in 1972. The label released new albums by Joe Henderson, Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner – and in the seventies double albums of older Riverside recordings. The Vinyl Room currently has 14 Milestone records.

What makes Milestone special?

The new recordings: Joe Henderson with “Tetragon” and “Canyon Lady”, Sonny Rollins with “Next Album” and “Easy Living” from his Milestone years from 1972, McCoy Tyner with “Together”, Bobby Timmons with “Do You Know The Way?”, Buddy Montgomery with “The Two-Sided Album” and Johnny Hammond with the jazz-funk of “Storm Warning” (1977).

The double albums brought back Riverside classics: Bill Evans with “The Village Vanguard Sessions” and “Spring Leaves”, Thelonious Monk with “Pure Monk” and “April In Paris / Live”, Art Blakey with “Thermo” and Benny Golson with “Blues On Down”.
