How often?

Joe Pass on vinyl: one guitar like a whole orchestra

In short: Joe Pass (1929–1994) is regarded as one of the great guitarists in jazz. His first records as leader came out in the early sixties on Pacific Jazz; in the seventies, on Norman Granz’ label Pablo, he became a sought-after partner of Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson – and a master of solo guitar. The Vinyl Room currently has 6 Joe Pass records.

What makes Joe Pass special?

On “Virtuoso” he plays entirely alone: melody, chords and bass line at once, as if a whole band were sitting inside one guitar. The record is regarded as a milestone of jazz guitar. “Portraits Of Duke Ellington” and “I Remember Charlie Parker” pay tribute to two of jazz’s greats.

The early years: “Sounds Of Synanon” was his first record as leader, “For Django” a tribute to Django Reinhardt. Plus “The Best Of Joe Pass”.
