How often?

Joe Henderson on vinyl: the tenor with a sound of his own

In short: Joe Henderson (1937–2001) from Ohio is regarded as one of the most individual tenor saxophonists after Coltrane and Rollins. At Blue Note in the sixties he recorded modern classics, at Milestone in the seventies he became freer and funkier, and in the eighties and nineties he enjoyed a big comeback. The Vinyl Room currently has 7 Joe Henderson records.

What makes Joe Henderson special?

Henderson played with a dark, soft tone and unusual, winding lines. “Inner Urge” shows him at Blue Note in a quartet with McCoy Tyner, while “Tetragon”, “Multiple” and “Canyon Lady” document his Milestone years between modal jazz, fusion and Latin.

“The State Of The Tenor” was recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1985, with just bass and drums – we currently stock both volumes. And on Alice Coltrane’s “Ptah, The El Daoud” he plays alongside Pharoah Sanders.
