How often?

George Benson on vinyl: jazz guitar between soul and CTI

In short: George Benson (b. 1943) from Pittsburgh began as a jazz guitarist in organist Jack McDuff’s band. In the seventies he recorded elegant albums between jazz and soul for the CTI label, before reaching a large audience as a singer too with “Breezin’” (1976). The Vinyl Room currently has 5 George Benson records.

What makes George Benson special?

A fluid, singing guitar: with Jack McDuff he got to know the soul jazz of the organ bands – in our stock on “George Benson / Jack McDuff”. On CTI he made “Beyond The Blue Horizon” (1971), an album with plenty of room for his playing.

“In Concert – Carnegie Hall” shows him live with flautist Hubert Laws, and “Benson & Farrell” in interplay with saxophonist and flautist Joe Farrell.
