Brother Jack McDuff on vinyl: soul jazz on the Hammond

In short: Brother Jack McDuff (1926–2001) is regarded as one of the great organists of soul jazz. In the sixties he made groove-driven recordings for Prestige with saxophonists such as Jimmy Forrest, Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt – and brought a young guitarist into his band: George Benson. The Vinyl Room currently has 6 Brother Jack McDuff records.

What makes Brother Jack McDuff special?

McDuff played the Hammond organ with a powerful bass, blues and plenty of swing – music for clubs and jukeboxes. “Tough ’Duff” (1960) with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest and “Rock Candy” show him at his best, “Stitt Meets Brother Jack” and “Soul Summit” in meetings with the great tenor players.

On “George Benson / Jack McDuff” you can hear the young Benson on guitar. “To Seek A New Home” (1970) was made for Blue Note in London, with a larger line-up.
