Four Tops

Four Tops on vinyl: Motown soul with the voice of Levi Stubbs

In short: At Motown the Four Tops from Detroit sang soul hits that are still among the best known of the sixties, written by Holland–Dozier–Holland: “I Can’t Help Myself” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There”. Lead singer Levi Stubbs had a powerful, pleading voice you recognise at once. The group sang in the same line-up for more than 40 years. The Vinyl Room currently has 10 Four Tops records.

What makes the Four Tops special?

Four voices that stayed together for decades – that was rare. We have the live album “Four Tops Live!” from their peak, “Yesterday’s Dreams” (1968) and “Nature Planned It” (1972).

The albums with the Supremes after Diana Ross’ departure are exciting: “The Magnificent 7”, “The Return Of The Magnificent Seven” and “Dynamite”. In 1972 the Four Tops moved to ABC – “We All Gotta Stick Together” dates from that time.
