The Supremes

The Supremes on vinyl: Motown’s biggest group

In short: The Supremes from Detroit were Motown’s most successful group – with Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard and twelve number-one hits in the US, from “Where Did Our Love Go” and “Baby Love” to “You Can’t Hurry Love”. After Diana Ross left in 1970, they carried on with a new lead singer. The Vinyl Room currently has 19 Supremes records from both periods.

What makes The Supremes special?

With songs by the Holland–Dozier–Holland team and Motown’s studio band, The Supremes became stars around the world in the sixties. They sang pop, soul and big show numbers – in our stock, for example, “The Supremes At The Copa”, “We Remember Sam Cooke” and “The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart”. From 1967 they were called “Diana Ross & the Supremes” and recorded albums like “Together” with The Temptations.

Less well known but well worth hearing are the seventies: with Jean Terrell as lead singer came “Right On”, “New Ways But Love Stays” and “Touch”, plus the duet albums with the Four Tops, “The Magnificent 7” and “Dynamite”. “The Supremes Produced And Arranged By Jimmy Webb” and “High Energy” show a group between soul and disco.
