Dr. Dre on vinyl: the sound of G-funk

In short: Dr. Dre’s real name is Andre Young, and he comes from Compton near Los Angeles. As a member of N.W.A, with “The Chronic” from 1992 and later as founder of Aftermath he shaped West Coast hip-hop – and furthered the careers of Snoop Dogg and Eminem. The Vinyl Room currently has 4 Dr. Dre records.

What makes Dr. Dre special?

His G-funk sounds warm and heavy: slow grooves, deep bass and high synthesizer melodies. “Deep Cover” from 1992, the title track for the film of the same name, was his first released single with Snoop Doggy Dogg.

“2001” from 1999 is his second solo album, with crisp, hard drums and guests such as Snoop Dogg and Eminem. On Eminem’s “Guilty Conscience” the two rap in turns.
