UK Garage

UK garage on vinyl: the garage sound of London

In short: UK garage developed in London during the nineties from American garage house: DJs played the records faster, while British producers developed styles with four-to-the-floor beats or broken 2-step rhythms. Through pirate radio and clubs the sound reached the charts around 2000, for example with Craig David. The Vinyl Room currently has 17 UK garage records.

What is UK garage?

Vocals and groove: Craig David is represented with “Slicker Than Your Average”, The Streets – Mike Skinner’s project – with “The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living”.

A new generation: Disclosure revisited the sound with “Settle” and “Caracal”, and Joy Orbison is here with “Still Slipping Vol. 1”. Under this style tag we also have Massive Attack’s “Special Cases” and Floating Points’ “Crush”.

What to look for

Many early UK garage tracks first came out as 12-inch singles for DJs; label, catalogue number and year of release help you tell which edition you have – it’s noted with each copy.
