Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic rock on vinyl: 1967, the Doors and the banana cover

In short: Psychedelic rock is the rock of the late sixties that experimented with long improvisations, studio effects and unfamiliar sounds. The Beatles, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd shaped it; today young bands carry the sound on. The Vinyl Room currently has 233 records in this style.

What is psychedelic rock?

1967 was the year of psychedelic rock: The Beatles released “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, the Doors their first album, Jimi Hendrix “Are You Experienced” and The Velvet Underground their album with Nico. The Rolling Stones also took the step with “Their Satanic Majesties Request”. In Germany, psychedelic rock soon turned into krautrock. Today bands such as Föllakzoid from Chile and Flamingods pick up the sound.

What to look for

Originals from the late sixties often have features that later disappear: the cover of “The Velvet Underground & Nico” shows a banana by Andy Warhol that could be peeled off on early editions. Mono and stereo versions often sound different in this period. Label, catalogue number, runout and cover together tell you whether you have a first pressing.
