Porro

Porro on vinyl: brass music from Colombia’s Caribbean coast

In short: Porro comes from Colombia’s Caribbean coast, above all from the regions of Córdoba and Sucre: brass bands – the bandas pelayeras, named after the town of San Pelayo – play it at festivals and parades. In the forties and fifties orchestras such as Lucho Bermúdez’s brought porro into the dance halls of the cities. The Vinyl Room currently has 16 porro records.

What is porro?

Brass at the centre: Pedro Laza is represented with his banda, plus “Candela” with singer Daniel Santos.

Alongside them come Alfredo Gutiérrez y Los Corraleros de Majagual with “Volvimos”, Adolfo Echeverría y Los Mayorales and La Sonora Cordobesa with “Recuerdos Del Carnaval”. Under this style tag we also have The Marvelettes’ “Sophisticated Soul” and harp music by Pepe Velásquez.
