How often?

Modern classical on vinyl: classical music today

In short: Modern classical brings together contemporary composers who write in the classical tradition – often calm and minimalist, with piano and strings, frequently combined with electronics. Our selection also includes a lot of film music. The Vinyl Room currently has 47 modern classical records.

What is modern classical?

Music that carries pictures: Joe Hisaishi wrote the music for Hayao Miyazaki’s “Castle In The Sky”, Hans Zimmer for “Interstellar” and Eric Serra for “Le Grand Bleu” – plus film music by Jóhann Jóhannsson.

Ryuichi Sakamoto is represented with his album “12”, Polish pianist Hania Rani with “Home”. Plus Colleen, Erik Skodvin and Anna von Hausswolff with a live recording from Montreux.

What to look for

Many soundtracks come out in several editions and colours; label, catalogue number and year of release help you tell which edition you have – it’s noted with each copy.
