How often?

Jazzdance on vinyl: jazz for the dance floor

In short: Jazzdance was a scene in Britain that grew from the late seventies and through the eighties: in clubs young people danced to fast jazz – bebop, Latin and fusion – played by DJs such as Paul Murphy and Gilles Peterson. Acid jazz later grew out of this scene. The Vinyl Room currently has 11 jazzdance records.

What is jazzdance?

Jazz for dancing instead of sitting: Us3 built “Hand On The Torch” from samples of old Blue Note records, plus rap and live instruments; and the “Blue Break Beats” series collected danceable Blue Note tracks for DJs.

Plus Matt Bianco with “Whose Side Are You On”, the compilation “AnotherLateNight” put together by Fila Brazillia and the “Break N' Bossa” compilations.

What to look for

Many of these records came out as 12-inches or compilations for DJs; label, catalogue number and year of release help you tell which edition you have – it’s noted with each copy.
