Dark ambient on vinyl: the dark side of silence

In short: Dark ambient is the dark form of ambient: deep drones, lots of reverb, noises and slow movement, often layers of sound rather than distinct melodies. Since the late eighties and nineties it has grown into a sound of its own, often close to film music and industrial. The Vinyl Room currently has 16 dark ambient records.

What is dark ambient?

Sounds that open up spaces: The Caretaker is represented with late parts of “Everywhere At The End Of Time”, in which the music increasingly falls apart. Norwegian Erik Skodvin works with quiet, dark textures on “Flare / Flame”.

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble combines dark ambient with jazz, Siavash Amini from Tehran with electronic layers of sound. Under this label we also have the music for the series “Stranger Things” by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein.

What to look for

Many dark ambient records come out on small labels, some sealed; label, catalogue number and year of release help you tell which edition you have – it’s noted with each copy.
