NPG Records

NPG Records on vinyl: Prince’s label

In short: NPG stands for New Power Generation – the name of Prince’s band, and the name he gave his own label. He founded it in the nineties, when, in a dispute with his record company, he performed under a symbol. After his death in 2016, archive recordings and new editions of his classics came out under the NPG logo. The Vinyl Room currently has 17 NPG records.

What makes NPG Records special?

Musically some records take you back to the nineties: “The Beautiful Experience” and “The Truth” came out as “The Artist (Formerly Known As Prince)” – “The Truth” originally in 1998, on vinyl only in 2021 –, plus the compilation “1-800-New-Funk” with musicians from his circle. “Planet Earth” followed in 2007.

After 2016 the archive opened: “Piano & A Microphone 1983” shows Prince alone at the piano, “Originals” his own versions of songs he wrote for others, and “Welcome 2 America” a finished album that had long been held back. Plus new editions of “Controversy”, “1999” and “Sign "O" The Times”.
