Night Dreamer

Night Dreamer on vinyl: live straight to the record

In short: Night Dreamer is known above all for an old, demanding technique: direct-to-disc. The musicians play live in the studio, and the performance is cut straight onto the lacquer, without first being stored on tape or digitally. Later edits and overdubs are ruled out. The Vinyl Room currently has 19 Night Dreamer records.

What makes Night Dreamer special?

The music comes from all over the world: Seu Jorge and Rogê with Brazilian samba, Marcelo D2 with SambaDrive, Sarathy Korwar with the Upaj Collective, the Turkish bands Moğollar and Baba Zula and drummer Okay Temiz with Islandman. Jazz comes from Isaiah Collier, Emma-Jean Thackray, Knoel Scott with Marshall Allen and the Nigerian trumpeter Etuk Ubong.

In the direct-to-disc sessions each side is made in one take – you hear the band exactly as it played in that moment. Add some quiet excursions – such as pianist Nicolas van Poucke playing Chopin.
