Kranky on vinyl: ambient, drone and quiet guitars from Chicago

In short: Kranky was founded in Chicago in 1993 and is regarded as one of the important labels for ambient, drone and post-rock. What makes Kranky special?

Grouper – the project of Liz Harris – sings as if from far away, wrapped in guitar, reverb and hiss. “A I A : Dream Loss”, “The Man Who Died In His Boat” and “Shade” are among her most beautiful, quietest records.

Disappears from Chicago are quite different: “Guider” and “Era” are hypnotic, angular rock. And Dedekind Cut combines ambient with big, cinematic sound fields on “Tahoe”.
