How often?

Hi Records on vinyl: the warm soul of Memphis

In short: In the seventies, under producer Willie Mitchell, Hi Records from Memphis became one of the great soul labels: Al Green, Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson and Otis Clay recorded here, backed by the house band Hi Rhythm. The Hi sound is soft, deep and springy – with dry drums, organ and horns. The Vinyl Room currently has 7 records on Hi Records.

What makes Hi Records special?

In 1973 Ann Peebles sang “I Can’t Stand The Rain” – with its unmistakable raindrop sound a classic of Southern soul. We also have “Tellin’ It” and “The Handwriting Is On The Wall”.

Syl Johnson came to Memphis from Chicago: “Back For A Taste Of Your Love”, “Total Explosion” and “Uptown Shakedown” show him between soul and funk. And Hi Rhythm, the band behind all these records, is here with its own album “On The Loose”.
