Flying Dutchman on vinyl: seventies jazz, funk and words

In short: Producer Bob Thiele founded Flying Dutchman in New York in 1969, after looking after John Coltrane at Impulse!. Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” came out here, as did Oliver Nelson, Gato Barbieri, Leon Thomas and Lonnie Liston Smith – jazz between swing, spiritual jazz and funk, plus political spoken word. The Vinyl Room currently has 51 Flying Dutchman records, mostly from the seventies.

What makes Flying Dutchman special?

Bob Thiele had produced “A Love Supreme” at Impulse! – with Flying Dutchman he went independent and gave his musicians a lot of freedom. Gil Scott-Heron combined poetry, soul and jazz here; “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” became one of the most influential pieces of the seventies. Lonnie Liston Smith mixed spiritual jazz and groove on “Cosmic Funk”, Gato Barbieri added Latin jazz with “Fenix”, and Oliver Nelson wrote big arrangements such as the “Swiss Suite”.

But Thiele also recorded the old masters, such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington with Teresa Brewer, or Earl Hines; historical recordings also came out, for example by Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins. And there were spoken-word records, for example by Angela Davis – a piece of American history around 1970.
