Drag City

Drag City on vinyl: songwriters and mavericks from Chicago

In short: Drag City was founded in Chicago around 1990 and is regarded as one of America’s most idiosyncratic indie labels. It released records by songwriters such as Bill Callahan, Will Oldham and Joanna Newsom, the Silver Jews around David Berman and plenty of music between folk, rock and experiment. The Vinyl Room currently has 8 records on Drag City.

What makes Drag City special?

David Berman is regarded as one of indie rock’s most brilliant lyricists: with the Silver Jews on “American Water” (1998) and some two decades later with Purple Mountains, his last project. Bill Callahan, formerly known as Smog, sings with a deep, calm voice on “Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle”.

Plus Baby Dee with “Safe Inside The Day”, guitarist Ben Chasny as Six Organs Of Admittance with “Companion Rises” and the Chicago trio Bitchin Bajas with the hypnotic sounds of “Bajas Fresh”.
