Daptone Records

Daptone Records on vinyl: soul and funk from Brooklyn

In short: Daptone Records was founded in Brooklyn in 2001 by Gabriel Roth and Neal Sugarman. The label records soul and funk the way it was done in the sixties – analogue, with a real band – and so turned Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley into celebrated voices late in their lives. The Vinyl Room currently has 8 records on Daptone Records.

What makes Daptone Records special?

Sharon Jones was the heart of the label: “Dap-Dippin’ With...” was the first album with the Dap-Kings, and “I Learned The Hard Way” (2010) shows the band in top form. Charles Bradley, the “Screaming Eagle of Soul”, released his first album, “No Time For Dreaming”, when he was over 60.

Plus the Afro-soul of the Budos Band, the funk of Sugarman 3 & Co, saxophonist Cochemea with “All My Relations” and rocksteady by The Frightnrs from New York. The Dap-Kings also played on Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black”, by the way.
