Cadet

Cadet on vinyl: jazz and soul from Chicago

In short: Cadet was the jazz label of Chess Records in Chicago. It was first called Argo and got a new name in 1965 because there was already a label called Argo in Britain. Cadet released soul jazz, vocals and lavishly arranged string records – often with a strong feel for the groove. The Vinyl Room currently has 27 Cadet records.

What makes Cadet special?

Pianist Ahmad Jamal is here with “Jamal At The Pershing Volume Two”, “Macanudo” and “Listen”, the Ramsey Lewis Trio with “Swingin’” and the Christmas record “More Sounds Of Christmas”. Harpist Dorothy Ashby plays jazz and soul on the concert harp on “Dorothy’s Harp”.

The Soulful Strings – a project of arranger Richard Evans – combine strings with soul, here with songs by Gamble & Huff. Add Etta James, Sonny Stitt with Bennie Green, Roland Kirk, Max Roach and Ray Bryant. Many early Argo titles were later repressed as Cadet editions – where we know the edition for sure, it is stated with the record.
