How often?

Avco on vinyl: sweet soul and early disco

In short: Avco started in New York in 1969 as Avco Embassy Records – with the producers Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore, known as “Hugo & Luigi”, and film producer Joseph E. Levine. With The Stylistics the label had one of the great vocal groups of sweet soul, and with Van McCoy a pioneer of the disco era. The Vinyl Room currently has 6 records on Avco.

What makes Avco special?

Falsetto and strings: The Stylistics from Philadelphia sang tender love songs, produced on their debut “The Stylistics” (1971) by Thom Bell. Later Hugo & Luigi took over, and Van McCoy wrote the arrangements – for instance on “Let’s Put It All Together” (1974) and “You Are Beautiful”.

Van McCoy himself scored a number-one hit in 1975 with “The Hustle”, which helped push the disco wave. We have “The Disco Kid” and “Love Is The Answer” with The Soul City Symphony.
