ATCO Records

ATCO on vinyl: soul and rock from the house of Atlantic

In short: Atlantic founded ATCO in 1955 as a subsidiary label – the name stands for ATlantic COrporation. First came rhythm & blues and rock ’n’ roll, for example from the Coasters, later Southern soul and, from the late sixties, lots of rock: Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly, Cream in the US and Derek And The Dominos. The Vinyl Room currently has 26 ATCO records.

What makes ATCO special?

With songs by Leiber & Stoller, the Coasters were one of ATCO’s first big acts; we have “The Coasters” and “The Coasters’ Greatest Hits”. Soul comes from Otis Redding with the posthumous “Tell The Truth”, Arthur Conley, the Bar-Kays with “Soul Finger”, the Persuaders and Donny Hathaway’s “Live” (1972).

Rock is here with Vanilla Fudge’s “The Beat Goes On” and Derek And The Dominos’ “Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs” (1970), plus guitarist Steve Hunter and Johnny Jenkins’ “Ton-Ton Macoute!” – and comedy from Rowan & Martin.
