Wayne Shorter

Wayne Shorter on vinyl: composer of modern jazz

In short: Wayne Shorter (1933–2023) played tenor and soprano saxophone, but became famous above all as a composer. He wrote for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and for Miles Davis’ second great quintet, and co-founded Weather Report in 1970. His sixties Blue Note albums are regarded as high points of modern jazz. The Vinyl Room currently has 10 Wayne Shorter records.

What makes Wayne Shorter special?

His pieces sound mysterious and clear at once – melodies you don’t forget over unusual harmonies. “Night Dreamer” (1964) opened his Blue Note years; “Speak No Evil” was recorded in 1964 and released in 1966 and is one of his best-known records.

We also have “The All Seeing Eye”, “Adam’s Apple” and “Schizophrenia”, the late-released “Etcetera”, the open “Odyssey Of Iska”, recorded in 1970, and “Blues A La Carte” with early recordings. Whether original or later edition is noted with each copy.
