How often?

Wardell Gray on vinyl: bebop from Central Avenue

In short: Wardell Gray (1921–1955) played tenor saxophone with a light, flowing tone between Lester Young and Charlie Parker. In the late forties he was one of the defining figures of the jazz scene on Central Avenue in Los Angeles, known for his tenor battles with Dexter Gordon. He died at just 34. The Vinyl Room currently has 6 Wardell Gray records.

What makes Wardell Gray special?

Gray combined the elegance of swing with the language of bebop – his lines sound effortless, even at high tempo. He played with Count Basie and Benny Goodman and traded tenor battles with Dexter Gordon such as “The Chase”.

His recordings were made within a few years; in our stock you’ll mainly find later collections: Prestige’s “Memorial” series, “Central Avenue”, “Los Angeles All Stars”, “Tenor Sax Favorites” and the compilation “Yesterday”, which also features Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan.
