How often?

The Sugarcubes on vinyl: indie pop from Reykjavík

In short: The Sugarcubes came from Reykjavík and from 1986 to 1992 were one of Iceland’s best-known bands – with singer Björk and second vocalist Einar Örn. With the single “Birthday” (1987) they became known in Britain and beyond, before Björk began her solo career. The Vinyl Room currently has 5 Sugarcubes records.

What makes The Sugarcubes special?

Quirky, playful indie pop: Björk’s voice leaps between whisper and scream, while Einar Örn sets dry spoken vocals against it. “Life’s Too Good” (1988) with “Birthday” and “Deus” was their successful debut, followed by “Here Today, Tomorrow Next Week!” (1989).

The collection “The Great Crossover Potential” sums up their years, and “Birthday (Christmas Mix)” is a remix version of their best-known song.
