The Dave Brubeck Quartet on vinyl: cool jazz from college to “Take Five”

In short: The Dave Brubeck Quartet around pianist Dave Brubeck and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond was regarded in the fifties as one of America’s best-known jazz groups. It played at colleges and universities and so brought jazz to a young audience. In 1959 came “Time Out” with Desmond’s “Take Five”. The Vinyl Room currently has 7 Dave Brubeck Quartet records.

What makes The Dave Brubeck Quartet special?

Brubeck’s powerful, often classically influenced chords and Desmond’s light, airy alto tone complemented each other perfectly. The concert recordings of the early fifties are regarded as high points of this partnership: “Jazz At Oberlin” and “Jazz At The College Of The Pacific” were made in front of students, “Jazz At Storyville” in a Boston club.

Plus “Brubeck Desmond” and “Dave Brubeck Quartet Featuring Paul Desmond” – recordings from the Fantasy years, before the quartet moved to Columbia.
