The Cinematic Orchestra on vinyl: jazz, samples and film music

In short: The Cinematic Orchestra is the project of Jason Swinscoe from London, on Ninja Tune since the late nineties. It combines jazz musicians, samples and strings into music that sounds like a soundtrack without a film. Their best-known tracks include “All That You Give” with soul singer Fontella Bass and “To Build A Home”. The Vinyl Room currently has 9 records by The Cinematic Orchestra.

What makes The Cinematic Orchestra special?

“Motion” (1999) built jazz from samples and live playing, and “Every Day” (2002) featured Fontella Bass – we have “All That You Give”. For “Man With A Movie Camera” Swinscoe wrote new music for Dziga Vertov’s 1929 silent film.

“Ma Fleur” (2007) is calmer and more song-like, and “To Believe” (2019) came after a long break. Plus the “Remixes 98 - 2000” – a good way into the project’s club side.
