How often?

Stanley Turrentine on vinyl: soul in the tenor saxophone

In short: Stanley Turrentine (1934–2000) from Pittsburgh had a warm, bluesy tone on the tenor saxophone. In the sixties he recorded for Blue Note, often with organist Shirley Scott, to whom he was married. In the seventies “Sugar” (1970) on CTI brought him to a wide audience. The Vinyl Room currently has 13 Stanley Turrentine records.

What makes Stanley Turrentine special?

Turrentine combined jazz with gospel and rhythm & blues – you recognise him after a few notes. We have Blue Note records such as “The Spoiler”, “The Look Of Love” and “Another Story”, plus the CTI years with “Don’t Mess With Mister T.” and the collections “The Sugar Man” and “The Baddest Turrentine”. With Freddie Hubbard he played concerts released as “In Concert”.

From the mid-seventies he recorded for Fantasy: “Pieces Of Dreams”, “Everybody Come On Out” and “What About You!” – grooving jazz-funk. And “La Place” (1989) shows him back on Blue Note.
