How often?

Sarah Vaughan on vinyl: “The Divine One”

In short: Sarah Vaughan (1924–1990) from Newark is one of the great voices of jazz. She started in the forties around Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker and sang with an enormous range, warm in the low notes, light at the top. They called her “Sassy” and “The Divine One”. The Vinyl Room currently has 9 Sarah Vaughan records.

What makes Sarah Vaughan special?

She sang like an instrument – with a bebop feel for harmony and great freedom in phrasing. During the fifties and around 1960 she recorded pop and jazz albums for Mercury; we have the duets with Billy Eckstine on Irving Berlin, “Great Songs From Hit Shows”, “Close To You” and “At The Blue Note”.

In the seventies she found new partners at Mainstream: Michel Legrand with a big orchestra, the quintet of pianist Jimmy Rowles and “Feelin’ Good”. On “More Sarah Vaughan From Japan Live” you hear her in concert.
