How often?

Nina Simone on vinyl: blues, jazz and soul with classical piano

In short: Nina Simone (1933–2003) from North Carolina actually wanted to become a classical pianist – and became one of the most distinctive singers of the 20th century. She combined jazz, blues, soul and folk, had hits such as “I Loves You, Porgy” and “My Baby Just Cares For Me”, and in the sixties became a voice of the civil rights movement. The Vinyl Room currently has 4 Nina Simone records.

What makes Nina Simone special?

Her deep, rough voice and her piano playing with Bach in the back of her mind make every recording unmistakable. “Nina Simone Sings The Blues” from 1967, her first album for RCA, shows her with a band and very close to the blues.

Alongside it we have the records “Nina Simone” and “Heart & Soul” and the remix 12-inch “Westwind / Too High”, featuring recordings by her and by Amp Fiddler, keyboard player and producer from Detroit.
